How to connect ChatGPT to your WhatsApp
Updated 12 October 2026
ChatGPT can't see your WhatsApp on its own. To let it set reminders from your chats, summarise busy groups or draft replies, it needs a connector. RelayMCP is a hosted WhatsApp MCP server you can add to ChatGPT as a remote MCP server, so you stay in control of what it can see.
Before you start
- A RelayMCP pilot account (join the waitlist).
- Your phone with WhatsApp.
- A ChatGPT plan and app that let you add custom connectors / remote MCP servers. OpenAI changes which plans support this, so check ChatGPT's current settings or help pages.
Steps
- Link WhatsApp. In WhatsApp on your phone, open Linked devices, tap Link a device and scan the QR code on your RelayMCP dashboard. Your old chat history isn't imported.
- Set your privacy first. On the dashboard, block any chats or groups you want kept away from the AI and choose how long messages are kept (72 hours by default).
- Copy your personal RelayMCP URL from the dashboard (it looks like
https://mcp.relaymcp.app/u/you). - Add it to ChatGPT as a custom connector / remote MCP server, using the URL you copied.
- Ask in plain language. Try "Summarise what I missed in the Society group today" or "Remind me Friday at 6 to follow up with the plumber."
Things to try
- "What time did Priya say the meeting was?"
- "If the supplier hasn't confirmed by Friday, draft a nudge."
- "Transcribe the voice note Mum just sent."
Privacy safeguards
- Block any chat or group. Its messages are dropped the moment they arrive: never stored, never shown to your AI, media never downloaded. Blocking also wipes anything already stored for that chat.
- Only you can unblock. Unblocking needs a code shown only on your own RelayMCP dashboard; your AI never sees it.
- Short memory, not an archive. Messages are deleted automatically after 72 hours (adjustable), and old chat history isn't downloaded when you link.
- Locked with your key (pilot feature). Stored messages and media are encrypted with a key only you hold, protected by a passphrase we never store. This protects stored data; it isn't WhatsApp's end-to-end encryption, and it doesn't cover metadata (who you message and when) or messages while the connected service is handling them. Details.
- Encrypted at rest, stored in India (AWS Mumbai). Logs never contain message text.
- Delete anytime. Unlink the device and all your data is wiped.
Anti-spam limits (always on)
RelayMCP is a reminder and follow-up tool, not a broadcast tool. On every plan: you approve sends; approved messages go out after a random 30–120 second delay; one person per message; no groups or broadcast lists; only your contacts or existing chats; no sends 9 PM–9 AM recipient-local; about 30 unique recipients a day; the same text to at most 3 people. Misuse gets the account paused or banned.
Good to know
- RelayMCP is in a private pilot. It's free for pilot users; join the waitlist to get access.
- It links to your personal WhatsApp as a companion device through WhatsApp's Linked devices feature. It is an independent product, not affiliated with or endorsed by WhatsApp or Meta, and WhatsApp's terms on unofficial clients apply to your account.
- Content your AI tool reads through RelayMCP is also processed by that tool's provider under its own terms.

Only through a connector you add. With RelayMCP, ChatGPT sees recent messages from chats you haven't blocked, kept for 72 hours by default.
Can ChatGPT send WhatsApp messages for me?
It can draft replies to your contacts, and nothing is sent until you approve it. Approved messages go out after a random 30–120 second delay, one person per message.
Which ChatGPT plans support it?
RelayMCP works with MCP clients that support remote MCP servers. Which ChatGPT plans allow custom connectors is set by OpenAI and changes over time, so check ChatGPT's current settings.
